EAST RUTHERFORD — Nasser Ahmed estimated his family had spent $2,400 to watch Liverpool beat Manchester City in a meaningless preseason game on Wednesday night. But it was all worth it, as he gestured around the tent at his children and their spouses before kickoff, "I'm a soccer fan. He's a soccer fan. She's a soccer fan."

All were at least nominally supporting Liverpool at MetLife Stadium. But they were really devoted to Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah. Ahmed wore his red No. 11 Liverpool shirt. His daughter-in-law Dina Rizk of Parsippany had an Egyptian national team jersey, also red, with Salah's name and No. 10 on the back.

Salah's impact extends far beyond the soccer field, MetLife Stadium, or even the United States. He scored Liverpool's first goal in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night. …
