1914: World War I began as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

1932: Federal troops forcibly dispersed the so-called "Bonus Army" of World War I veterans who had gathered in Washington to demand payments they weren't scheduled to receive until 1945.

1975: The conviction of former state Sen. Frank Mazzei, a Democrat who represented parts of Allegheny County, on federal extortion charges was upheld by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

2002: Nine coal miners trapped in the flooded Quecreek Mine in Somerset County were rescued after 77 hours underground.

2005: Kaufmann's department store announced that Federated Department Stores Inc. would convert Kaufmann's to its Macy's brand.
