Most people will remember the familiar face of Salford actor Joe Gladwin from his time in the long-running television comedy, Last of the Summer Wine. He played Wally, the hen-pecked husband of the redoubtable Nora Batty, from 1975 to 1987.

¦ He was also well known for portraying short sighted Stan Hardman in the television series, Nearest and Dearest, from 1968 to 1973.

¦ Gladwin was born at 44 Tatton Street in Ordsall and was educated at the Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Primary School.

¦ He married Lily Anne Wynne at Mount Carmel church in December 1933 and was appointed a Papal Knight of the Order of St Gregory the Great for his charity work the same year. ¦ Gladwin suffered from rhoticism - the inability to say the letter 'r' - throughout his acting career. He disguised it by substituting a guttural sound which became a trademark of his film and television roles. …
