The ombudsman for Canada's veterans says while the federal government has implemented a number of his recommendations over the years, veterans are still finding difficulty accessing some benefits and services.

Guy Parent has released his 2018 report card, detailing Ottawa's response to recommendations made by the ombudsman's office over the past 10 years.

Parent says progress has been made on the veterans file since his update last year, adding that the government has addressed 46 of his 64 recommendations.

But he says among the most important recommendations of the 18 left untouched is ensuring that veterans are being reimbursed for treatment expenses under the Veterans Well-being Act, and retroactively to the original application date. (4)



Fire crews continue battling dozens of wildfires in northwestern Ontario, including a big one in cottage country where the 89-square-kilometre "Parry Sound 33" fire is inching closer to a stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The nearly two-week-old blaze was just six kilometres from a portion of Highway 69 at last report late yesterday.

The ministry reports 39 active fires in northeastern Ontario and more than 100 in the province's northwest -- including 44 deemed out of control. (4)



Twin wildfires in Northern California are threatening some 10-thousand homes and posing yet another struggle for firefighters already stretched thin by a summer of deadly blazes.

The fires straddling Mendocino and Lake counties have burned seven homes and forced tens of thousands of people to flee.

About 160 kilometres north, near Redding, a fire that has killed two firefighters and four civilians has become the ninth most destructive wildfire in California's history. (4)
