Motorists Feel 'Trapped' by New Rules on MOT Failures

MOTORISTS could be left unable to drive their car away from a garage due to a new set of MOT rules implemented this year.

A new grading system came into effect on May 20 but it has emerged this week that some drivers are being left trapped at garages after their vehicle failed the test.

Faults are now rated in three defect categories - dangerous, major and minor. If a dangerous or major fault is found, the vehicle fails the MOT and motorists are not allowed to drive their car away from the garage - leaving many to believe they need to have their vehicle fixed on the spot.

A vehicle shouldn't be driven again until the major or dangerous fault has been resolved.

You risk being fined for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT and your insurance would be invalid - risking a fine, points and a potential ban. …
