A MAN was detained following a dramatic three-hour stand off with police in the Northern Quarter.

Specialist officers climbed onto an aerial platform to negotiate with the man, who was inside a flat on Oldham Street.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 11.45am yesterday to reports of an assault. A large number of police - including the Tactical Aid Unit and mounted unit - were mobilised, as well as the North West Ambulance Service and crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue.

The street was cordoned off, as were Great Ancoats Street and Whittle Street.

A man could be seen at the window of a flat, shouting at officers.

He was later seen throwing water and items from the window at police.

A GMP spokesman confirmed the incident was brought to an end just before 3pm. …
