1763 Col. Bouquet's army defeated the Indians at the Battle of Bushy Run, in present-day Penn Township, Westmoreland County, on Aug. 5 and 6, thus the siege of Fort Pitt had come to an end. People who had taken shelter in the fort returned to the places where they once lived and set out to build new cabins.

1921 A baseball game was broadcast for the first time as KDKA radio announcer Harold Arlin described the action between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies from Forbes Field. (The Pirates won, 8-5.)

1962 South African anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela was arrested on charges of leaving the country without a passport and inciting workers to strike; it was the beginning of 27 years of imprisonment.

1995 Despite the rain, 31,147 fans attended the Pirates' game at Three Rivers Stadium as part of the Post-Gazette's sponsored "Ballot by Ballpark" in support of keeping the team in Pittsburgh. …
