Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he won't take back Canada's criticism of Saudi Arabia over the detention of several human rights activists last week.

Trudeau says while his government recognizes Saudi Arabia has made strides in how it treats people, it will not apologize for the tweet Global Affairs Canada sent Sunday that sparked a dispute with the kingdom.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has since spoken with Saudi officials about their concerns, which quickly morphed into a diplomatic spat, with edicts ceasing new trade and a ban on Canadian wheat imports, and a Saudi order that all of its students and patients leave Canadian universities and hospitals.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister says there is nothing to mediate, and Canada must apologize.(1)



The U-S has determined that Russia used a nerve agent to poison two people in Britain last March -- and in retaliation, will impose new sanctions later this month.

The State Department says its determination of Russia's illegal use of a chemical weapon came in the case of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

Both were poisoned with the military-grade nerve agent Novichok in Salisbury, England.

The Kremlin has denied involvement.(1)



Six people died, including two American tourists, following a highway crash in Alberta's scenic Jasper National Park.

Tuesday's tragedy happened on a popular tourist route through the Rocky Mountains between the resort towns of Jasper and Lake Louise.

A northbound van carrying five members of a family from Louisiana and Texas collided with a southbound vehicle, causing both to burst into flames.

Two of the Americans died at the scene, two others were badly injured, and a two-year-old was not hurt.

All four people in the second vehicle were killed, but their identities haven't been released yet. …
