(Italy-Highway-Collapse)

Italian authorities have raised to 35 the number of dead, with three others missing and about a dozen people still hospitalized from Tuesday's collapse of a highway bridge in the northern port city of Genoa.

An 80-metre span of the half-century-old Morandi Bridge crumbled during a violent storm, sending more than 30 vehicles plunging 45 metres down.

What caused the stretch of highway to break off is under investigation, but there had been proposals to upgrade the bridge.

Two Canadian students say they missed being under that bridge by mere minutes.

Tamar Bresge (BREHZ'-ghee) and Melissa Light from Toronto say they'd been frustrated when their train stopped at a station outside Genoa, but soon realized something was wrong when they heard sirens. (1)

(Afghanistan-Assault)

Afghan officials say a Taliban assault on two adjacent checkpoints in northern Baghlan province has killed 30 Afghan soldiers and police.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the late Tuesday attack in Baghlan-I Markazi district.

The Taliban carry out near-daily attacks against Afghan security forces, who have struggled to combat the insurgency since the U-S and NATO formally concluded their combat mission in late 2014. (1)

(Fredericton-Shooting)

Visitation services are scheduled for later today for one of the victims of Friday's deadly shooting at a north Fredericton apartment complex.

A gunman is accused of shooting and killing Bobbie Lee Wright and Donnie Robichaud, and then fatally shooting responding Fredericton Police Constables Robb Costello and Sara Burns.

A public visitation will be held tonight for Wright, although there will be no funeral by request -- and there will be no visitation or funeral services for Robichaud, also in keeping with his wishes.

Fredericton police will hold a regimental funeral to celebrate the lives of the fallen officers on Saturday at the University of New Brunswick. …
