An unfamiliar refrain is greeting passengers in one screening lane at the C gates of St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

"This lane, this lane only -- all we need is shoes off," a Transportation Security Administration officer called out Tuesday.

No need to pull liquids and laptops from carry-on bags at the computed tomography (CT) checkpoint scanner, which allows TSA officers to view a 3D image of the inside of a bag, similar to how a CT scanners are used at hospitals. Images can be viewed and rotated on three axes, a more thorough viewing than the flat images other machines.

TSA officials gave a demonstration of the new technology Tuesday. The C gate was chosen for the new scanner because it has enough room, taking the gate from six to seven lanes, said Duane Huelsmann, an assistant federal security director. …
