TORONTO - The Toronto District School Board has identified a teen who died while trying to rescue people from drowning at a local beach.

Spokeswoman Shari Schwartz-Maltz says 16-year-old Kyle Howard-Muthulingam was a well-liked student at an east Toronto arts school where he excelled at drama and dance.

Howard-Muthulingam died on Friday afternoon shortly after he saw a mother and her young son become distressed while swimming.

Police say the teen and another woman jumped in the water to help, and while the mother and son were pulled to safety, and investigators have said Howard-Muthulingam later died in hospital.

Schwartz-Maltz says the school board has reopened the Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts so students can gather and mourn his loss throughout the day on Wednesday. …
