(BC-Judge-Cries)

A provincial court judge in Kelowna says that just because judges show human compassion, it doesn't amount to judicial bias.

Judge Monica McParland has refused to recuse herself from sentencing a man convicted of sexual interference because she shed a tear during a victim impact statement.

The request was made by the man's defence lawyer, who said the judge also scoffed at her suggestion for a sentence.

But McParland says affidavits presented by the defence depended on inappropriate opinion and speculation about what she was thinking and feeling -- and she agrees with the Crown that the bulk of the allegations against her were "simply not accurate." (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Wildfires)

The B-C Wildfire Service says things have the potential to go from bad to worse for a massive fire burning in the northern Interior.

It says gusty winds forecast for today have added to the potential danger after it issued a warning of extreme fire behaviour for the nearly 600-kilometre Shovel Lake fire that's charred an area from Fraser Lake to Fort St. James.

High winds were also a key reason for an evacuation alert issued last night for about 45-hundred residents of Kimberley in the southeast due to a 56-square-kilometre wildfire south of the city.

The B-C Wildfire Service has also tweeted that it was seeing an increase in fire activity in the Kamloops Fire Centre, which was hard hit by major blazes in 2017, because temperatures were rising, relative humidity was dropping and winds were starting to kick up. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Wildfire-Donations)

The province says it will match all donations to the Red Cross wildfire relief fund to a maximum of 20-million dollars.

It says that will make donations to help those affected by the wildfires burning across the province go even further.

Forests Minister Doug Donaldson says the Red Cross provides critical help in emergency situations like this and it's important that the province support that work.

The matching contributions will be provided until October 12th. …
