Although the air quality in Allegheny County is substantially different than it was decades ago, there are significant, in some ways, worse, conditions now. For example, small particulate matter reaches deeper into our lungs, and may take longer to expel, than larger particulate matter. The particulate matter in the air locally is significantly unhealthful.

Our health department's Air Quality Program has a clean air fund, which collects fines from companies that violate air quality regulations. These violations contribute to the region having some of the unhealthiest air in the nation. We are ranked within the 10 unhealthiest air quality regions! During the past 15 years, the fines in the department's clean air fund have financed local pollution-reduction programs.

Recently, the county Board of Health decided to use some of these fines to renovate the Air Quality Program's office building. …
