We Catholics who aren't so disgusted by the systemic corruption in the church that we simply leave it should look at this sad era as an opportunity to call for large-scale reorganization of its autocratic, top-down structure, which has allowed the abuses to continue uncorrected for decades.

This is more than the failure of many individuals: It is the inevitable failure of a system of governance without checks and balances, where authority and financial management are concentrated in a few persons at the top who can operate without meaningful oversight. It is a painful reminder of the maxim that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
