Health officials say everyone from pregnant women to extreme athletes could be affected by the smoke hanging over Western Canada from some 550 wildfires currently burning across British Columbia.

Sarah Henderson of the B-C Centre for Disease Control says when pregnant women are exposed to smoke, it can cause lower birth weights that can lead to longer-term problems for their babies.

The B-C government's air-quality health index rated conditions at a very high-risk level of 10-plus yesterday in areas including Castlegar, Whistler, Nanaimo, and parts of the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan and Metro Vancouver.

Two weekend triathlons were cancelled because of thick smoke in the central Okanagan. (2)



Southern Ontario is preparing to get drenched by a significant rainfall for the third time this month.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Windsor and Sarnia areas through Hamilton and Toronto, warning of the potential for heavy rainfall today and "torrential downpours" in some regions.

The cottage country region north of Toronto and the eastern shore of Lake Huron can expect 30 to 50 millimetres by tonight, and even more could fall in the North Bay, Parry Sound and Huntsville areas.

The Toronto area experienced flash flooding earlier this month when up to 100 millimetres of rain fell in just two hours -- and another downpour last Friday flooded some downtown streets and forced some transit service to be shut down. (2)



U-S President Donald Trump's administration is preparing to announce a plan today to give states broad authority to determine how to restrict carbon dioxide and other greenhouse-gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

The Environmental Protect Agency says states will be given guidelines for setting performance standards for coal-fired power plants. …
