As a long-standing Presbyterian clergyman, I grieve deeply these days for my Roman Catholic clergy friends and lay brothers and sisters in the Christian faith.

The damage wrought by the current sexual scandal involving some within their church's priestly ministry and the challenges it now faces because of it, are enormous, deep and heart-breaking to us all. The spiritual pain issuing from the sexual misbehavior and foisted on thousands of Catholic children and youth is causing damage to the reputation of the whole Christian church by whatever denominational name. It will probably take decades for the church's leadership to fully recover its self-respect and reputation and to be healed. Since the church as the "body of Christ" is spiritually one body, we Christians, by whatever denominational name, are also vulnerable and considered damaged goods. …
