THIEVES smashed up a cash machine and fled with the contents during an early-morning raid.

Police were called to the Co-op supermarket, on Church Road in Gatley, Stockport, shortly before 3.15am yesterday.

When officers arrived they discovered an amount of money had been ripped from the ATM in the shop wall.

Co-op was forced to close yesterday morning and images from the scene showed the cash machine hanging from the wall.

It's unknown exactly how the cashpoint was damaged badly enough to take the money inside, but police have launched an investigation and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

No arrests have yet been made. A police spokesman said: "Shortly before 3.15am on Friday, August 24, police were called to a Co-op on Church Road in Gatley. …
