Young O'Fallon Christian Knocks off Orchard Farm in Overtime HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Article excerpt

O'FALLON, MO. - The dynamic O'Fallon Christian sophomore football class was on full display Friday night.

Chris Futrell and A.J. Taylor scored two touchdowns each, Roddy Alexander added a rushing score, Kaden McMullen threw for a TD, Cartrell Ecford-Green had a couple of key sacks and Chevy Brenson recovered the game-clinching fumble in overtime to seal a 27-24 season-opening home victory over Orchard Farm.

All are part of the Class of 2021.

"We have great senior leadership, but the problem is I don't have that many of them. The guys that are seniors and juniors bring it every day," O'Fallon Christian coach Andy Hare said. "But, we have a huge and outstanding sophomore class. Those guys have been playing together a long time, they love each other and they're just coming together."

O'Fallon Christian went just 2-8 last fall, so Friday's win should do wonders for the collective confidence of its young core moving forward.

"When you're young, mistakes can compound," Hare said. "So, this is a big win for us just to get us on the right track."

Thanks to the cool leadership of veteran senior quarterback Connor Jones, Orchard Farm grabbed a 24-20 lead on a 52-yard bomb from Jones to Blake Weber down his own sideline with 3 minutes, 51 seconds left in the third quarter.

"We've got big plans for Connor this season," Orchard Farm coach Eric Schroer said. "He's an extremely tough kid and he really matured from junior to senior year. He's a great leader. We're very lucky to have him."

But, O'Fallon Christian bounced right back with a 69-yard scoring run by Alexander just 47 seconds later. It stayed that way until the game's waning moments.

As dynamic as the young Eagles of O'Fallon Christian are, that the game even got to overtime can also be attributed to their youth.

O'Fallon Christian seemingly had the game won when Jones was sacked on a foruth-and-25 at midfield on the last play of regulation. …
