BELLEVILLE - Columbia opened its Saturday afternoon boys soccer game against the Mascoutah Indians with plenty of hunger, and it didn't take long for the Eagles to satisfy their appetite.

Senior Riley Hubler scored the first of his three goals less than six minutes into the first half to ignite the Eagles' 5-0 victory on the steamy turf at Belleville West High School.

The win gave Columbia a division championship in the Metro Cup Tournament. The Eagles finished 3-0-1 and outscored their opponents 14-1.

"We've come out in every game this year to try to score as many goals as we can," said Hubler, who had 25 goals as a junior. "And our defense also is locking down, not letting anybody score. It's working out for us right now."

Columbia was 23-1-2 last season and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Triad in the Class 2A Mascoutah Regional championship game that ended its dreams of a second state championship in four seasons.

If the opening week of the season is any indication, coach Jason Mathenia's team appears poised to give it another run.

"We'll see down the road," Hubler said. "I think we've got a good chance, but we've still got to figure out how to play together as a team. We'll see what happens in the future. This is a great start. We'll build on it and hope for better things."

Hubler's goal in front made it 1-0 at 5 minutes, 48 seconds. Sophomore Jonah Jones converted inside the left post at 21:30 to make it 2-0.

The Eagles then scored three second-half goals. Hubler made it 3-0 with a goal inside the left post at 54:17, and penalty kicks by senior Cameron Eden at 57:29 and Hubler at 73:21 closed the book.

"The last two games, we've come out strong. We've come out to prove a point," said Mathenia, whose team's other tournament games were a 1-0 win over Springfield, a 1-1 tie against Class 2A state runner-up Gibault and a 7-0 victory over Belleville West. …
