1859: Edwin L. Drake drilled the first successful oil well in the United States in Venango County, near Titusville.

1930: Sara Soffel was sworn in by Judge Richard Kennedy as judge of the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, the first woman jurist in Pennsylvania.

1949: A violent white mob prevented an outdoor concert headlined by Paul Robeson from taking place near Peekskill, N.Y. (The concert was held eight days later.)

1976: A federal grand jury indicted 38 district magistrates, charging them with conspiracy and racketeering.

1991: Despite public protest, the University of Pittsburgh began demolition of the Syria Mosque.

2008: Barack Obama was nominated for president by the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
