FOX POINT, N.S. - A memorial service will be held this weekend to mark the 20th anniversary of the Swissair disaster off Nova Scotia.

Residents and family members of the lost are expected to gather at a monument in Bayswater to reflect on the tragedy that claimed 229 lives on September 2nd, 1998.

For many in the area, the anniversary will be a chance to celebrate those who perished in the accident and acknowledge the efforts of Nova Scotians who tried to help in the aftermath.

Bob Conrad was one of many fishermen who raced through the darkness off Peggy's Cove in a futile bid to find survivors.

Instead, he found himself in the middle of a sprawling debris field full of plane wreckage, luggage and all manner of human remains.

Conrad -- whose home overlooks the area in St. Margaret's Bay where the plane went down -- says the horror of that night has been overtaken by the friendships he has made with families who lost loved ones. …
