City Schools, Other Districts Schedule Early Dismissals Because of Extreme Heat

The extreme heat forecast for this week has led some area school districts including Pittsburgh Public Schools to schedule early dismissals for students.

The forecast calls for temperatures to climb to 92 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Thursday's high is expected to be 89.

Pittsburgh Public Schools on Tuesday will dismiss students and staff two hours earlier than normal dismissal time from all schools and early childhood centers. Middle and high school athletics will continue at the discretion of head coaches, the district said in a release.

All other afterschool activities are canceled.

The district will monitor temperatures throughout the week and announce any other schedule changes ahead of time.

Districts also calling for an early dismissal include Mount Pleasant Area in Westmoreland County, which has early dismissals scheduled through Wednesday, and Laurel Highlands School District in Fayette County. …
