¦ September 4, 1982: Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Corrigan retires hurt only three minutes into the Division One match against Watford at Maine Road.

It took a lot to down Big Joe.

On this occasion it was a collision with Watford forward Nigel Callaghan resulting in a dislocated shoulder.

Full-back Bobby McDonald took over in goal and made fine saves from Callaghan, Luther Blissett and Gerry Armstrong.

Substitute Dennis Tueart headed the only goal of the match fourteen minutes from time.

The result put City at the top of the table after three straight wins.

¦ September 8, 1981: Belle Vue action group hand in a 20,000 petition at Manchester Town Hall to block plans for houses on the site of the famous amusement park and zoo.

It was a losing battle. The zoo had closed in September 1977 when the owners decided they could no longer sustain losses of £100,000 a year - and the amusement park followed suit in 1980. …
