AN investigation into how a crane came to collapse on Market Street has been launched by Manchester council.

The machinery seems to have sunk into the ground outside an entrance to Debenhams in the early hours of yesterday.

It is not clear what the link is between the sinking and visible damage to the pavement beneath it. Manchester council were called to the incident and have since made the site safe.

Council staff will be carrying out an assessment of the pavement after the crane has been removed.

A town hall spokesman said the crane was hired by a contractor to carry out a structural survey on behalf of Debenhams, but the firm did not approach the council for the necessary licence for the crane to operate. The spokesman said the crane would be removed as soon as possible and the council would be carrying out investigations. …
