Florence Becomes First Major Hurricane of Season

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Just hours after Tropical Storm Gordon landed near the border of Alabama and Mississippi, the first major hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season was born.

Florence ballooned to a Category 4 hurricane later Wednesday, its long-term future still not clear, as two more potential cyclones were looming behind it on the hurricane assembly line that is the African coast at this time of the year.

With wind speeds measuring 130 mph, Florence - said by forecasters to be no threat to Florida at this point - was moving northwest in the central Atlantic at a pace of about 13 mph, which means it still would be traversing the open ocean into next week.

In a Wednesday afternoon analysis, hurricane forecasters said Florence was near the southern edge of a zone of strong vertical shear and as a result had been predicted to weaken. …
