This week's heat wave (Sept. 3, "Pittsburgh Public Schools, Other Districts Schedule Early Dismissals Because of Extreme Heat") hits close to home in a year that is on track to be one of the hottest on record.

While Pittsburgh schools close early this week, California battles its largest wildfire in history and crops in Europe are failing due to heat and drought. At the same time that parts of Pennsylvania were having their wettest July on record, Japan had both damaging floods and about 100 heat-related deaths.

We've always had hot days, but as the climate warms, we can expect more of them; in fact, we're likely to have twice as many 90-plus-degree days annually by midcentury. A warmer climate makes extreme weather such as heat waves and heavy rain events (and associated costly flooding and landslides) more likely. …
