MONDAY 10 Literature / Sally Rooney Even if you're not the biggest bookworm, it's been hard to ignore the loud, excitable chatter surrounding Irish author Sally Rooney. Her debut novel, Conversations with Friends, was one of 2017's most universallylauded fiction titles, prompting the New York Times to hail her as 'the First Great Millennial Author'. Rooney's second book, Normal People - which only hit the shelves last week - has already been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and the rights for a TV adaptation have recently been snapped up by the BBC. It's a remarkable rise for a writer who is still only 27.

Not that Rooney should be pigeonholed as a writer who deals solely with millennial concerns. Both of her novels explore universal themes - the intricacies and intimacies of relationships - all delivered with wonderful powers of observation, and a real talent for smart, pithy dialogue. …
