(CRIME-Fraud-Charges)

A Calgary man who bilked dozens of car owners out of more than two-million dollars has pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud over five-thousand dollars.

Sean O'Brien was facing 164 fraud and theft charges in connection to his vehicle consignment company, Treadz Auto Group.

Nearly one hundred people agreed to sell their vehicles on consignment through the company from 2011 to 2014 -- each paying 299 dollars and signing a contract.

The company never compensated the owners after the cars were sold to unsuspecting buyers.

O'Brien will be sentenced at a later date. (CBC Calgary)

Poverty advocates say this policy is discriminatory and is --quote-- "glaringly inconsistent" with Canada's international obligations to protect human rights.

The report estimates roughly 3,000 families are excluded from the Canada Child Benefit based on their immigration status.

It also says non-permanent residents are required to pay income tax, but do not qualify for the child benefit. (The Canadian Press)
