CITY paid considerably over the odds for Riyad Mahrez this summer, according to a transfer study.

The CIES Football Observatory looked at all the moves that happened in the most recent transfer window and determined that City paid EUR28m more than what is considered a 'fair' price.

Chelsea's purchase of Kepa Arrizabalaga was the only move to be deemed more inflated, with Maurizio Sarri apparently paying EUR44.7m over the top to land his replacement in Thibaut Courtois.

City paid an initial £60m for Mahrez from Leicester but the reported price in the study is £75m (EUR85m), a figure that will only be reached if the player meets all of the performance-related clauses.

The 'fair' price is explained as corresponding to 'the average between the estimated cost for the most likely buyer before the transfer and the current transfer value'. …
