Now five years into his role as United's executive vice-chairman, Woodward has quietly been overseeing a behind-the-scenes revamp of the club's academy, scouting network at training facilities at Carrington.

United's scouting network in Europa, Asia and South America has trebled in size in recent years and the club now have more than 50 scouts to call upon around the world.

The latest recruit is former City talent spotter Romain Poirot, who has been tasked with identifying 'world-class and emerging talent' in France.
