Hundreds Fill Mattress Factory in Tribute to Founder

About 500 people gathered Thursday at the Mattress Factory to pay tribute to Barbara Luderowski, the late founder of the North Side museum.

The event to celebrate her life was a party and a fundraiser, as she had requested. But it was also an opportunity to mourn the loss of a leader in the art community who built a unique institution that enchants visitors and draws national and global attention to Pittsburgh.

The evening began with the somber lament of a bagpiper and segued to soul-themed drag queen performances.

Attendees ranged from young artists who have been bolstered by the museum's support of unbridled creativity to leaders of area cultural and funding institutions.

Admission to the evening celebration was "pay what you will," and a teenager from the museum's teen co-op program "registered and paid $10 of her hard-earned money to attend the event," said Caitlin Harpster, museum director of development. …
