Council Oks Ordinance Allowing Chickens New Law Willl Be Revisited in 2019

Article excerpt

Bethel Park residents now will be permitted to keep chickens on their property.

Council voted 7-1 on Monday to establish an ordinance that allows chickens to be raised in residential districts.

Members Joseph Consolmagno, Jim Hannan, Don Harrison, Mark O'Brien, Jim McLean, Timothy Moury and Lorrie Gibbons voted in favor of the ordinance. Paul Dixon voted no.

"I'm very much in favor of chickens," said resident George Girty. who said he anticipates he will be raising chickens as a family project.

"I'm just thrilled we are at this point," resident Jenn Wittkopp added.

Mr. O'Brien gave a pun-filled response to the ordinance.

"Many people are egg-cited," about the prospect of raising chickens, he said. "We must look on the sunny side, and that is fresh eggs," he added, as the crowd chuckled.

Mr. Consolmagno cautioned residents not to raise chickens "for the novelty" of it, and urged anyone wanting to keep chickens to consult with an expert.

Mr. Dixon, who voted against the ordinance, said he is concerned about the waste that will be generated by the chickens and worries that it would end up in the sanitary sewer system. He also worries about chickens attracting predators like coyotes and being able to properly enforce the regulations in the ordinance.

"I think it just doesn't comport with the suburban character of Bethel Park," he said.

Mr. McLean said he is prepared to give the residents who want to keep chickens "the benefit of the doubt" and said that if needed, the ordinance can be tweaked. …
