His meaty fingers skip along the upright's keys,

his voice booming through walls

you are my sunshine.

His wife, in the cellar, washes load after load

of diapers, undershirts, blouses, socks.

A clothesline bisects the room, strung

with Catholic school uniforms, one wall graced

with a crucifix, while in the kitchen older children

wash dishes, peel carrots, slice bread.

Younger ones merge and part like a school

of shiny fish, the newest baby snug

in the arms of the oldest daughter.

Bits of conversation filter through rooms

homework, pajamas, lunches for tomorrow

the mother's laugh wafting up the stairs

as she drags starched and folded laundry

ready to be put away. …
