A 2-year-old girl was hit and killed by an ice cream truck Sunday afternoon in Wentzville.

The girl was struck about 3:45 p.m. in the 4900 block of Summer Rain Drive in Wentzville, according to Officer Jacob Schmidt, a spokesman for the Wentzville Police Department.

The toddler was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:52 p.m., Schmidt said.

The girl was among a group of adults and children who bought treats from the ice cream truck, he said. She crossed in front of the vehicle, which began driving forward and hit her.

"It's a heartbreaking incident," Schmidt said. "I can't help but think of my own family and children. It's sad all the way around."

The girl's name had not been released. A neighbor said the girl lived at a home that had inflatable play structures outside on Sunday night, across the street from where the ice cream truck sat for several hours as police investigated. …
