(Parliament-Fall-Session-Trans-Mountain)

After losing a Liberal M-P to the Conservatives at the start of the fall parliamentary session, the Trudeau government found itself on the defensive as the opposition parties hammered the Liberals on several files.

All parties took shots at the Liberals over how they have managed the economy and ongoing negotiations over a renewed North American Free Trade Agreement.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer also criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for being unable to get the Trans Mountain pipeline twinning project off the ground.

There's word the government is considering hiring a retired senior judge to help it fix what the Federal Court of Appeal said is wrong with the stalled expansion project. (5)

(Ont-Plowing-Match)

It's politics and plowshares today as Ontario's premier and its Opposition leader trade the confines of the legislature for a southwestern Ontario field.

Premier Doug Ford and N-D-P Leader Andrea Horwath will be in Chatham-Kent today for the International Plowing Match, where the political leaders will keep up a long tradition of competing to see who's best able to plow in a straight line.

The match comes during a tense time in the legislature, as Ford's Conservatives invoke the rarely used notwithstanding clause to override a court ruling and push through a bill that would slash the size of Toronto city council just weeks ahead of a municipal election. (5)

(Train-Derailment-Repairs)

The group that has recently taken over the Hudson Bay Railway in northern Manitoba says a deadly derailment last Saturday could delay efforts to repair the year-old damaged line to Churchill.

Arctic Gateway Group says the derailment south of Thompson that killed one railway worker and injured another might block ballast from reaching the scene, and staff may have to halt repairs and head west to fix the recent damage. …
