Woman, girl, injured in separate dog attacks

CALGARY - A woman and a young girl in Calgary are recovering from bites after unrelated dog attacks, including one involving a canine that had been injured in a collision.

Police and emergency medical authorities say the woman has minor injuries after she and some other bystanders came to the aid of a German shepherd that had been hit by a vehicle at an intersection around 4 p.m. Thursday.

The city's Animal and Bylaw Services says the dog, which had to be put down because of its injuries, may have been acting defensively when it lunged at the woman.

The girl, who is believed to be 10, was bitten by a pitbull cross at a separate location about half an hour later.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance but officials say her condition is not considered life-threatening, although her injuries include lacerations to the face. …
