UNITED have taken goalkeeper Paul Woolston on trial after he was released by Newcastle.

The Reds named the 20-year-old on the bench for the Under-23s' 2-0 win at Middlesbrough on Sunday as new No.1 Matej Kovar continued in goal. M.E.N. Sport revealed last week United were attempting to sign a new goalie to provide competition for Kovar and fellow 18-year-old custodian Alex Fojticek.

The Reds are keen to conclude a deal for Woolston, but he is understood to be open to heading abroad to revive his career.

United signed former Leeds goalkeeper Theo Richardson on an 18-month deal in January 2017 to provide back-up in the Under-23s.

Woolston's distribution and ability have impressed United coaches but he stands at around six feet tall, which is partly why Newcastle released him. …
