Death of Missouri Prisoner Found with 'Homemade' Needle Has Been Ruled an Overdose

ST. LOUIS - A Missouri prisoner has died from a fentanyl overdose, records show.

Shane C. Young, 32, of Seymour, Mo., was found unresponsive at 1:39 a.m. June 6 in his cell at the South Central Regional Correctional Center in Licking, Mo. A prison commander told officials then that Young had a "homemade needle in his arm."

Young was taken to a Jefferson City hospital, where he was pronounced dead June 12.

His death was initially attributed to natural causes. A toxicology report filed last month found fentanyl and other drugs in Young's system, according to the autopsy report. His death has been reclassified as an overdose.

In an April report in the Post-Dispatch about the opioid epidemic spreading into prison, the Missouri Department of Corrections said three inmates died from overdoses in 2017. …
