JOHN Stones could play more often in holding midfield after coming through his first start there for City.

The England defender stepped up into a new role for the Carabao Cup game against Oxford on Tuesday night, having come off the bench against Cardiff in that position.

Manager Pep Guardiola is searching for some cover for Fernandinho, having failed to sign a back-up for the position in the summer.

Stones has been talked about as an option, and did enough at the Kassam Stadium in the 3-0 win to satisfy his manager that he could be used there again in future.

"Yeah, he played quite good," said Guardiola.

"In the first half he was marking almost man-to-man with the No.10, it was not easy to find but in the second half he was more comfortable.

"He needs time to do it, but he's clever and he has a good pass, good vision and is strong in the air. …
