Ceremony honours five survivors of Edmonton attack

EDMONTON - The five survivors of an attack in downtown Edmonton were recognized at a weekend ceremony to honour fallen service men and women.

Const. Mike Chernyk and four civilians injured in the September 2017 attack were acknowledged Sunday at the 20th annual Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Day.

The event is held in memory of those who have died in the line of duty.

Chernyk was struck by a speeding car then stabbed outside an Edmonton Eskimos football game on Sept. 30, 2017.

Hours later, a cube van sped through the downtown, injuring four pedestrians.

One man faces 12 charges after the attack and will go to trial next fall.
