WASHINGTON -- Jacob deGrom has a simple philosophy when it comes to his starts: post as many zeroes as possible and keep his team in the game.

He's met his goal repeatedly this season, and it now has him in the record book.

By dominating the Nationals to earn his ninth win in a 4-2 victory Friday, Jacob deGrom set an MLB record with his 23rd straight quality start per the Elias Sports Bureau.

DeGrom (9-9, 1.77 ERA) allowed one run in seven innings while striking out eight in his next-to-last start, and Jay Bruce drove in two runs.

"You probably have been the most consistent, best pitcher in baseball for a long time, not just this year," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said of the record. "I guess in the history of the game, right, that's one that is all by itself. That's how I see it. …
