Hurricane Michael's pounding waves and winds left only slabs of concrete in the sand at ground zero on the Florida Panhandle where the epic Category 4 hurricane slammed ashore on Wednesday.

The storm obliterated row after row of beachfront homes in Mexico Beach, Florida.

What the 2.7-metre storm surge didn't destroy, the 250-kilometre-per-hour winds finished off.

Now recovery is just barely beginning, even as a downgraded Michael spreads high winds and flash-flooding misery in Virginia bound for the open sea, possibly brushing south of Nova Scotia.

An insurance company estimates hurricane Michael caused about eight-billion dollars in insured losses. (2)

(WEA-Tropical-Storm-Deaths)

At least three deaths are being blamed on the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental U-S in over 50 years.

Authorities say one of those deaths -- an 11-year-old girl in southwest Georgia -- can only be described as a freak accident.

They say Sarah Radney was in her grandparents' home when powerful winds lifted the portable carport next to the house high into the air, and slammed it back down on the house.

When it landed, one of the legs tore through the roof, fatally striking Sarah in the head. (2)

(BC-Pipeline-Fire)

Natural gas service to much of British Columbia is being gradually restored following Tuesday's pipeline explosion north of Prince George that shut down the province's major supply artery to homes, institutions and industries.

Investigators from the National Energy Board, the Transportation Safety Board and the pipeline's owner, Calgary-based Enbridge, remain at the blast site trying to determime what caused it.

Mounties say there are no indications the explosion was a criminal act.

Enbridge says it has approval to restart gas service on a second secure line.

Supplier Fortis B-C says gas is starting to flow again, but is urging users to continue conserving energy for now. …
