Airport Bypass Finally Opens ... but Not in Time for Rush Hour

THE long-awaited Manchester Airport bypass was opening today - but not in time for the morning and evening rush hours.

After decades of planning and months of delays, transport chiefs announced that the £290m road was due to open to traffic at 9pm.

Workmen began putting the finishing touches to the road, which stretches from Hazel Grove in the east to Manchester Airport in the west, last night. But bosses say the size of the road means this is a 'complex procedure', so the bypass won't open until tonight.

It's led to fears there would be 'traffic chaos' during rush hours, with drivers mistakenly believing the bypass is open.

The road is intended to provide a link between Stockport, Manchester and east Cheshire.

The huge project includes 11 new and upgraded junctions, and 11 bridges including four railway crossings, as well as a shared cycle and pedestrian path that runs parallel along the whole road. …
