Woman Sentenced for Lying about Suspect, Gun in Slaying of Officer

A woman charged with hindering the apprehension of a man accused of killing a New Kensington police officer last year has been sentenced.

Westmoreland County President Judge Rita Hathaway on Friday ordered Lakita Cain, 40, of New Kensington, to serve three to seven years in prison.

Prosecutors said Cain lied to investigators about the location of Rahmael Holt and his gun after he allegedly shot New Kensington police Officer Brian Shaw Nov. 17. Investigators said Holt went into Cain's Victoria Avenue home shortly after the shooting and hid the gun in the basement.

Valerie Veltri, Cain's defense attorney, said she was shocked by the length of the sentence because it was outside the guidelines for the crime Cain committed.
