(Cannabis-Legal)

Though there are certainly some kinks still to be worked out, Canada's move to legalize marijuana could influence other countries as they mull whether to end their own bans on the drug.

Drug-law reform advocates say Canada's status as a major economy and a good international partner lend additional weight to its decision to legalize the sale and use of recreational pot.

Legal sales began yesterday as more than 110 legal pot shops and government-run websites opened for business.

Among other countries considering legalization are Mexico and New Zealand, where the government has promised a referendum on the issue by 2020.

Uruguay is the only other country with legal sales. (3)

(CRIME-Child-Death)

A Calgary jury is expected to get instructions from the judge and to begin deliberating today about whether a local couple is responsible for their 14-month-old son's death five years ago.

Jennifer and Jeromie Clark have pleaded not guilty to criminal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessaries of life for their son John.

The trial heard the Clarks brought their son to hospital on November 28th, 2013, but that he died the next day after a seizure and two cardiac arrests.

The Crown says the baby's parents should have sought treatment sooner for a nutritional deficiency.

A face-to-face meeting has done little to sort anything out between the two men battling to be New Brunswick premier.

Liberal Premier Brian Gallant requested yesterday's meeting to get input on a throne speech expected next week.

However, Tory Leader Blaine Higgs says the content is not his concern because his party -- which holds one more legislative seat than the Liberals -- will vote against it. (3)
