As a player and coach, Wigan-born Mike Gregory was one of the most influential figures in Rugby League throughout the 1980s and 90s. He captained Warrington and Great Britain and had coaching spells at St Helens, Swinton and Wigan as well as the international teams of Wales and Scotland.

¦ Born in May 1964, Gregory was a brave and skilful loose forward who made his debut for Warrington in September 1982.

¦ He played for the club until February 1994, making 222 first team appearances and scoring 45 tries. ¦ Gregory won 20 caps for Great Britain and captained tours to New Zealand and Australia.

¦ He scored a try when the Lions upset Australia in the third test at Sydney on the 1998 tour.

¦ As a coach, Gregory spent three seasons at St Helens as assistant to Shaun McRae from 1996 to 1998. …
