Apparently, Sutherland didn't need to raise his voice, because he was such a regal and intimidating figure. He had come from Scotland to Pittsburgh as a teen, and legend has it the first football game he ever saw was one he played in.

He became an All-American guard and then a coach at Lafayette and finally Pitt. He never married and has no known relatives, Kramer tells me. He enjoyed a drink of Scotch now and then. He loved his mother and built her a home in Scotland. He resigned at Pitt when the school suddenly de-emphasized football in the late 1930's. His final game was a 7-0 loss in a snowstorm at Duke 80 years ago next month.
