Gateway Arch Builders Reunion Has New Digs

ST. LOUIS - The Gateway Arch hosted some special visitors Saturday -- its own builders.

A large crowd of people lined up to chat with 20 men who worked on the monument in the early 1960s and to get their autographs in the newly renovated lobby of the Arch's tram to the top.

The annual Arch builders reunion coincides with the anniversary of "topping day," Oct. 28, 1965, when the last piece of the Arch was installed.

Retired engineer Mike Schuller of the Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company drove from Pittsburgh with his wife, Rosemarie, for the reunion, their first since the 50th anniversary in 2015.

The couple were impressed by the new Arch grounds that "really connect to the city," Rosemarie Schuller said.

The annual reunions started in 2002, and the 2015 reunion was intended to be the last as the number of surviving workers has dwindled. …
