United Set to Confirm Signing of Goalkeeper Woolston

UNITED are set to announce the signing of former Newcastle goalkeeper Paul Woolston next week.

The M.E.N. reported in September the Reds had taken the 20-year-old on trial after it emerged the club was attempting to sign a new goalie to provide competition for Under-23 players Matej Kovar and fellow 18-year-old custodian Alex Fojticek.

United coaches were keen to conclude a deal for Woolston a month ago and it is understood the club is set to confirm his official arrival.

Woolston's distribution and ability have impressed the Reds but he stands at around 6ft tall, which is partly why Newcastle released him. South Shields-born Woolston also spent time with Darlington and Sunderland's academies.

United allowed academy goalkeepers Dean Henderson, Joel Pereira and Kieran O'Hara to embark on season-long loans, but that has left them short of a more experienced option in the second string. …
