1517: Martin Luther sent his 95 Theses denouncing what he saw as the abuses of the Catholic Church, especially the sale of indulgences, to the archbishop of Mainz, Germany, marking the start of the Protestant Reformation. By some accounts, he also posted the Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany.

1864: Nevada became the 36th state as President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation.

1948: A four-day smog began to lift from the Pittsburgh area after causing the death of 20 people in nearby Donora.

1984: Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two Sikh security guards.

2007: As part of a reorganization of Pittsburgh high schools, plans were announced to close Schenley High School due to asbestos and deteriorating infrastructure.
